Forex partial exits: one setup is not three wins
Compute a quantity-weighted result for multiple targets and a losing remainder instead of summing target headlines.

Freeze the originating position identity
Give the setup one stable identity and each exit leg its own operation identity. Target announcements are updates about that setup, not new independent entries. A channel can truthfully report that two targets were reached while the final combined position still loses after the remaining exposure and costs. Keep the originating quantity visible beside every leg.
A second entry is different from a partial exit. If it increases exposure, preserve its price, quantity and decision time rather than averaging it into the first ticket without a version trail. Whether an evaluation counts the two entries as one family or two trades needs a declared rule, not a favourable choice after the path resolves.
Weight movement by the quantity actually closed
For a simple common-entry illustration, the contribution of each exit is its pip movement multiplied by the fraction of initial quantity closed there. Summing the full headline pips of every target assumes the whole original position was independently closed at each level. That double-counts exposure. Fractions must add to the declared closed population, with an open remainder retained separately.
A complete cash reconstruction is stronger: compute each leg using its actual prices, base quantity and conversion event, then apply its booked costs. A weighted-pip summary is only a convenient bridge when the entry and contract basis are shared. It is not a substitute for quantity changes or different fee currencies.
Keep stop revisions and residual exposure visible
A break-even label may refer only to entry price. Commissions, financing and execution differences can leave an economic loss. Preserve the exact revised stop, amendment clock and actual fill. A requested stop at entry cannot certify zero realised cash risk, and an unfilled amendment cannot be treated as an executed exit.
An open leg needs a dated valuation convention. It should not be combined with realised proceeds as though it has settled. If the report closes its measurement window before the position closes, show realised and unrealised components side by side and retain the original expected family.
Compare equivalent scoring rules
Two providers can use different target conventions without either figure being directly comparable. Ask whether the result is a full-position outcome, a maximum excursion, a target tally or quantity-weighted realised contribution. Their names and denominators matter more than which displayed number is larger.
A consumer review should reproduce a representative row, including an unfavourable remainder, before trusting a monthly total. This page supplies a fictional counterexample, not a finding that a named service used misleading accounting. Missing source records remain unknown and should not be filled with assumed target allocations.
Completed fictional case
Fictional 10,000-unit setup: close 25% at +20 pips, 25% at +40 and 50% at -40. Weighted movement is 5 + 10 - 20 = -5 pips. At 1 quote unit per pip for the original quantity, gross is -5 quote units. With 2 separately booked units of cost, net is -7. The first two target announcements do not create two positive setup outcomes; adding 20 and 40 would misrepresent the residual loss.
| Record | Represented finding | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| First quarter | +5 weighted pips | 20 x 0.25 |
| Second quarter | +10 weighted pips | 40 x 0.25 |
| Remaining half | -20 weighted pips | Final gross -5; net -7 after declared cost |
